Sanding down to bare wood and applying two to three coats of finish is generally what most hardwood floors require. Small rooms take about two to four days to complete, however larger projects can take anywhere from three days to several weeks, depending on the finish type, the stain and the weather conditions. A room that is 15×15 feet should cost about $350-$900. This averages out to $1.50 to $4 per square foot.

Custom hardwood floor refinishing for a 15×15 feet room with vintage wood and using multiple coats of chemicals, stains and other finishes can be costly. This is a labor intensive project and will take 8 to 11 days or more for even small projects. The price for custom hardwood floor refinishing is about $850-$1,125. This averages out to $3.75 to $5 per square foot.
